Things to See and Do on Marco Island, Florida
Located in the Gulf of Mexico, Marco Island is a great place for those looking for sun, sand and a chance to relax. Less than 13,000 people live on the island full-time, although the population doubles during the high season (December to February). Marco Island offers visitors many opportunities to enjoy beach life without the crazy mobs that are the standard in other Florida destinations.
Marco Town Center Mall

This mall is a lot more than a shopping destination. Designed as a large garden full of benches, cobblestone paths and lounging chairs, the mall invites visitors to relax in between stops at the many boutiques and shops in the complex. There is also a great selection of restaurants here, as well as health and food markets and a spa. The Marco Town Center Mall is also center stage for a series of live events, such as Music Under the Stars, a concert series held on weekends between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. There are also holiday specials, as well as Meet the Artist events. The Marco Island Trolley, which takes visitors on tours around the island, leaves from the mall as well.

Marco Island Beaches

More than 15,000 visitors make their way to Marco Island every summer to enjoy the pristine, quiet beaches. Tigertail Beach is the most popular because it appeals to families, offering a play area for children, lots of food stalls and a water sports equipment rental stand. Hideaway Beach, on the other hand, can only be accessed by boat, and requires a permit or invitation by a resident. Other beaches, like Residents Beach and South Beach, require a resident permit (one can be obtained even if you don't live in the area, as long as you are staying in one of the local hotels). Chickee huts and tables are available at most of the beaches.

Tours on the Water

Marco Island is a great departing point to explore the surrounding waters. Everglades airboat tours, kayaking, canoeing and sailing are all possible, as are fishing trips (even nighttime ones) and private luxury charter. Sea Excursions is one of the many companies based on Marco Island that offers sea tours, dinner cruises and Everglades tours and sailing. Shelling trips are also an option, as the company takes visitors to private barrier islands to explore sandy beaches and hunt for shells, tulips and scallops. Guided tours are also possible, especially if you're bringing along your own group.
