Located in Lee County, Florida, Sanibel Island is home to the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses a third of the island. Considered the "seashell capital of the world," Sanibel Island
beaches lay east and west along the island, allowing waters from the Gulf of
Mexico to reach its shores.
Lighthouse Beach
Lighthouse beach is located at the end of Periwinkle Road and offers a fishing pier and hiking trails through the nearby native wetlands.
Bike Trails
A bike trail circles Sanibel Island, and individuals may rent bicycles, hybrids and scooters. Bike rental businesses, located on Periwinkle Way, boast two-hour-minimum rental times, available tour guides and reasonable rates.
Golf
Two championship golf courses can be found on Sanibel Island. Both courses are sanctioned to protect the environment, as they are located within wildlife preserves. Instruction is offered by USTA and PGA professionals.
Fishing
Chartered fishing tours and fishing piers are readily available for the avid fisherman to take advantage of. Redfish, sea trout, tarpon and snook are just some of the varieties of fish that can be caught in the area.
Kayaking
Rent traditional kayaks, pedal kayaks, canoes and boats to travel the waterways or nature preserves to sight-see and witness exotic birds, dolphins and great blue herons.
