Reef Snorkeling
Many of Royal
Caribbean ships stop in the port of Key West, allowing for a fantastic snorkel excursion. Near your ship's dock, you'll board a catamaran heading to Key West's live coral reef for snorkeling. All equipment is provided, along complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks on the return trip.
Wows and Woes
After taking this trip and having a wonderful time, I prepaid on my second cruise to do it again. Despite rough weather, the excursion went on as planned, though few people left the boat because the water was unsafe for anyone but very strong swimmers.
Insider Tips
The ship does not give refunds for excursions reserved ahead of time. If there is a chance of bad weather, make your reservation the night so you don't get stuck on a wobbly catamaran and rough seas. Bring a water-safe camera, towels and sunscreen. Consider bringing over-the-counter seasickness medication, ginger tablets or anti-nausea wristbands if you have trouble with seasickness.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
My most memorable moment was seeing all the way to the bottom of the ocean while snorkeling. It was incredible. Some more experienced divers swam below the surface to get a closer look at the live reef and colorful fish.
Bottom Line
When the seas are calm, you can't beat the pristine views of natural marine life. It's truly a magical experience. The staff is young, friendly and helpful.
