About Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center was the idea of John D. Rockefeller, and it is named after him. In addition to the office buildings in the Center, there are restaurants like Top of the Rock and an underground shopping arcade. The tour of 30 Rockefeller Plaza takes you to the studios used for some of NBC's most popular shows. The studio for the Today Show can be seen from the outside. It is at the southeast corner of 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
Location
Rockefeller Center is located in midtown Manhattan, from 49th street to the south to 52nd Street to the north and 5th Avenue to the east to 7th Avenue to the West.
Size
Rockefeller Center encompasses 11 acres of land and contains 19 commercial buildings.
History
Rockefeller Center sits on land that was formally occupied by tenement houses and movie theaters. The land was owned by Columbia University.
Origin
Ground was broken for Rockefeller Center in 1929 and the first building, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, was completed in 1934.
Christmas Tree
The first Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was put up in 1931. The first tree was put up by the construction workers and was decorated with cranberries, garlands of paper and tin cans.
