The Temecula Valley is about 1 hour north of
San Diego and less than 1 1/2 hours from
Los Angeles. It makes a nice day trip or overnight with a vacation in either city. If you think everything in Southern California is new, head to Old Town, where historic buildings date from the 1890s. You can tour almost 20 wineries and shop for antiques or go hiking or biking.
Wows and Woes
For kids who don't enjoy touring wineries with their parents, make a quick stop at Pennypickle's Workshop, Temecula's Children's Museum, where there are all sorts of crazy inventions and hands-on opportunities.
The wines here are not as well-regarded as those in the north, with good reason; the sunny weather, while great for outdoor activities, isn't so great for grape growing.
Insider Tips
If you are a spa junkie, the South Coast Winery resort & Spa offers packages that are less expensive than similar ones in Napa or Sonoma.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
We took a family hot air balloon ride, which offered stunning early morning views and the thrill of floating high in the sky. We landed at Wilson Creek Winery to start touring.
Bottom Line
Prices are lower than the renowned wine country up north, but you can still find nice restaurants and hotels. We took a hot air balloon ride for only $125 each.
