Sunset and great food are the hallmarks of dining in Bali Hai at the Hanalei Bay resort. Set in a lush, tropical setting overlooking Hanalei Bay, the menu features Pacific Rim offerings, drinks with umbrellas, high-end service and a view to die for. Though the restaurant was closed for renovation as of summer 2009, it promises to be even more visually stunning when it reopens.
Wows and Woes

WOWS
Dine at sunset and watch the gorgeous light show as the sky turns from pink to purple to black.

Ahi poke and sashimi are super fresh.

WOES
Expect to pay for the view and food---prices are high, even by Hawaii standards.

Service can be slow.

Insider Tips

Fresh fish is a house specialty, and any of the dishes that include macadamia nuts are a real treat for the palate. The appetizer menu, called "First Courses," offers a great variety of choices, and the plates are large enough to pair with a salad for a complete meal. And remember not to miss the sunset.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

We stayed at Princeville, and friends treated us to a meal at Bali Hai for my husband's birthday. We watched dolphins play in the bay as the sun set over this picturesque spot. I can still recall the taste of the fresh ahi mixed with wasabi, sesame ginger and Maui onions.

Bottom Line

This is a wonderful place to celebrate a special occasion or soak in Hawaii's natural beauty. Despite sometimes slow service and high prices, it was a meal to remember.
