Located next to the popular Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu, between Waikiki and downtown, the Ala Moana Hotel is a contemporary property with a poolside bar, fitness facilities, four restaurants and three bars on site and complimentary wireless Internet access. Guest rooms are chic and have city, mountain or ocean views.
Wows and Woes
Shopping, shopping, shopping. You'll walk right out the door and into the expansive, recently renovated Ala Moana Shopping Center. After a full day of shopping, have a sunset drink at the poolside bar.
This is an urban hotel, with all the attendant street noise, and service may be inconsistent.
Insider Tips
No matter what view you want, ask for a room on one of the higher floors to enhance your experience and lessen the street noise. The hotel has more than 1,000 rooms and has a unique location for vacationers. Just walking distance to the Ala Moana beach Park, it is a cab ride to Waikiki and other area attractions.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
Though no longer open, a dinner at Aaron's on the top of the Ala Moana Hotel was one of the finest dining experiences I've ever had. Perfect ahi, fresh oysters and a beautiful bottle of wine--though we did not opt for the nearly $500 1985 Chateau Margaux that was available. The Hawaiian sunset and excellent company made it a night to remember.
Bottom Line
Though not a traditional Honolulu resort, the Ala Moana Hotel is certainly an oasis in the city. Better for business travelers than vacationers.
