Wows and Woes

The location can't be beat as it is within close proximity to most Charleston attractions. Guestrooms feature 32-inch flat screen HDTVs. The hotel's on-site restaurant, Wentworth Grill, offers good Lowcountry cuisine as well as a trans fat-free Southern menu. The top-notch Marriott bedding is heavenly. The outdoor courtyard makes a pleasant place to relax with a cup of coffee and a morning newspaper.

Because this hotel is in an older building, rooms and bathrooms are a bit small, but have been comfortably updated. Ask for a corner room for accommodations that are a little roomier.

Valet parking is available, but you can save a little by parking in the garage across the street from the hotel. When making reservations, ask for a room that does not overlook the pool area unless you want a view of bikini-clad sunbathers. If you are a beer connoisseur, skip the surprisingly limited selection at the hotel bar and head to the Southend Brewery on East Bay Street.

Renaissance Charleston Lounge
Renaissance Charleston Lounge

I remember being in Charleston on an unusually cold night in which I nearly froze to death on a ghost walk tour. What a treat it was to return to the hotel's lounge where I warmed up with a hot toddy at a fireside table. Not a typical Charleston experience, I guess that's why I've never forgotten it!
