How to Prepare for an Alaskan Cruise

Alaska
Alaska
If you have never been on a cruise to Alaska before, you may not be sure exactly how to prepare for one. If you wait until the last minute, you may not have the documents needed. If that happens, you will not even be allowed on the cruise ship. You may also forget something important that isn't available for sale on the ship.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need:
  • Credit card Travel documents Medications Clothing Cash
  • Credit card
  • Travel documents
  • Medications
  • Clothing
  • Cash
Step 1

Book your cruise and shore excursions ahead of time. You can do this by calling the cruise line. You will need your credit card to make a down payment. If you wait to book your trip and excursions you could miss out on the type of cabin you want or the type of activity you want to do on shore.

Step 2

Get your trip paid for ahead of time. You can easily make payments each month or week by calling the cruise line. The cruise line will give you a date by which the final payment must be made.

Step 3

Gather your travel documents together. You should bring your driver's license and birth certificate if you live in the United States. If you live outside of the United States, you will need a passport. If you don't have these items, then you will need to get them ahead of time.

Step 4

Arrange for your doctor to give you enough of your medications to get you through the trip. It is also a good idea to bring along your health insurance cards in case anything happens and you need medical attention.

Step 5

Check the climate for the time of year you are visiting Alaska in order to know what type of clothes to pack. In the summer you may want to bring an extra sweater and light jacket because it can get cool at night. In the winter you will want a heavy jacket.

Step 6

Pack some cash. You are going to want to be prepared with a bunch of $1 bills. This is how you will tip your room service man or room maid.

Step 7

Charge all of your media equipment. If you plan to bring items such as your camcorder, you will need to prepare it ahead of time by allowing it to charge for a few hours. Decide if you want to bring your laptop, digital camera, cell phone, MP3 player or iPod. Bring all of their chargers and extra batteries.
