Situated in the Water Park Capital of the World, the Polynesian
resort in Wisconsin Dells is home to the first indoor water park in the
United States. Today, the resort boasts two indoor water parks and four acres of outdoor water play within a mile of downtown and scenic sandstone bluffs of the Wisconsin River.
Wows and Woes
The Polynesian costs about $100 less per night than many of the other water park hotels. Although the resort does not feature the Dell's more extreme water attractions, it is perfect for families with smaller children. The pirate theme carried through Blackbeard's Dark Tunnel Mystery Voyage (lazy river) and the 40-foot outdoor buccaneer ship add an element of imagination.
The resort is one of the original water park hotels in the Dells. It was remodeled in 2003, yet peeling paint and discoloration of some of the water attractions combined with bland room décor are signs it could use another update.
Insider Tips
Polynesian's snack bar, Aloha Bar & Grill, offers sandwiches and beverages, but the resort lacks a full-service restaurant on site. For nearby dining options, travel along Frontage Road (Highway 13) toward downtown or south on Wisconsin Dells Parkway (Highway 12) through the main water park strip.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
Although my 2-year-old slipped down an indoor staircase, fell out of her inner-tube on a water slide and hid her eyes as we passed by pirates along the indoor lazy river, she proudly carries around her Polynesian kid club card and teases to go back to the "pirate hotel."
Bottom Line
The Polynesian is a great value for tourists with younger children.Adults may not be too impressed, but the experience resonates with kids.
