How to Plan a Disneyland Vacation on a Budget

The expenses incurred on a trip to Disneyland in California can add up quickly. However, with advanced planning and a few compromises, the trip doesn't have to blow your vacation budget. The time of year you travel is the first way to save money, as most hotels charge higher rates on the weekends and during the busy season, which is usually from March to July. There are some other ways to save money even if you travel during the busy season.
Lodging

Staying at a Disney resort will eat up a large portion of your budget, while staying at a hotel or vacation rental off-site can save you some money. If you have children, a vacation rental may be the best option since these are regular houses complete with a kitchen, bedrooms and a full-sized bathroom.

Meals

If you want to experience the food at Disney, opt to eat lunch at the park because lunch is generally cheaper than dinner. Also, pack snacks and drinks in a cooler or backpack for children so you can offer a snack and/or drink while waiting in line.

Souvenirs

Decide before you go to Disneyland how much you will spend on souvenirs. While you are at the park, purchase a small souvenir, such as a key chain, then buy larger Disney-themed items at shopping centers outside the park--not only will this save you a bundle, you won't have to worry about getting someone to watch your souvenirs while you are on rides.

Transportation

Even if you have a car with you, a considerable amount of money can be saved by taking advantage of public transportation or hotel shuttle services to Disneyland. As of March 2009, parking is $12 per car, so if you visit the park five days on your vacation and opt to use a shuttle service, you can save as much as $60.

Park Hopper Pass

If you want to spend more than one day at a Disney park, consider a park hopper pass. In March 2009, a single day ticket was priced at $59 for a child and $69 for an adult, while a six-day park hopper pass is $164 for a child and $194 for an adult.
