Matzah is an unleavened bread allowed during Passover
Passover is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the Hebrews' escape from slavery in Egypt. It falls around March or April every year, depending on the Hebrew calender. During Passover, observant Jews avoid eating chametz--leavened grains, such as bread. This can make eating out difficult, but in the
Miami area there is a large local Jewish community and there are a few restaurant options for Passover.
Shalom Haifa Restaurant
Shalom Haifa Restaurant is family-owned and operated. It has been run by Nathan and Shoshana Bolila and their sons, Arieh and Boaz, since 1988. Shalom Haifa is located in North Miami beach and is open for lunch Sunday through Friday and dinner Sunday through Thursday; it is closed on Saturdays. On the menu are many Moroccan and Middle Eastern-inspired dishes. The restaurant has been serving Passover-friendly meals on the holiday since it opened. These include the likes of matzah ball soup and Israeli salad -- tomato and cucumber mixed with oil, lemon and salt. Shalom Haifa is also well-known for its popular gefilte fish which is served during the special Passover meals. The home-cooked Passover meals here follow the strictest of dietary guidelines.
China Kikar Tel Aviv Restaurant
China Kikar Tel Aviv is the only kosher Chinese restaurant in the area, though it serves both Chinese and American-styled dishes. During the winter, the restaurant serves dinner Sunday through Thursday and then Friday and Saturday Shabbat meals. During the summer months, only Shabbat meals are served. To attend a Passover meal here, you must call ahead and pre-pay to reserve your space. The Passover meal is done buffet-style and features items such as gefilte fish, matzoball soup, beef brisket, chopped liver, fish, salads, chicken, chulent and kugels. There are also salads, fresh fruit and desserts. The buffet served on Passover follows the dietary guidelines of the holiday. China Kikar Tel Aviv is located in the Carriage Club, which also hosts shabbas services.
41 on the Bay
41 on the Bay is a kosher Miami restaurant that opened in 2009. Greenwald Caterers, famous for their high food standards, are the owners of this restaurant. Generally, 41 on the Bay serves dinner Sunday through Thursday and then serves a pre-paid shabbos meal Friday evening and Saturday afternoons. On Passover, the restaurant serves a pre-paid dinner. The Passover menu includes hot and cold buffet options such as corned beef, prime ribs, turkey, chopped liver, egg salad, cholent, kishka and different kugels. 41 on the Bay only serves kosher foods but follows even stricter dietary guidelines on the Passover holiday. Guests can also attend a local service with Chevra Shas in the same building where the restaurant is located.
