Disneyland tests new attractions extensively before introducing them.
Disneyland rarely rushes to make changes in the park, and prefers to slowly develop new attractions that can become classics. For that reason, only new or improved attractions have opened in recent years.
Celebrate! A Street Party
Premiered in 2009, Celebrate! bears a strong resemblance to other Disney parades but takes the emphasis off the floats and puts it on performers, who dance at three stops along the route. The unusual feature of this parade is that it invites audience participation; audience members are asked to join in the dancing through a conga line and individual dancing. Take time to check it out if you and your family like to get involved in the action.
Sleeping Beauty Castle Walk-Through
Closed from 2001 to 2008, the Sleeping Beauty Castle reopened as a walk-through attraction in 2008. Inside, a series of displays tell the story of Sleeping Beauty through special effects combined with static animation. Each display is preceded by a large "book" that tells the story of Sleeping Beauty. This is an excellent attraction for young children who are interested in the movie or the story.
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
A retooling of the previous Submarine Voyage attraction that closed in 1998, Finding Nemo opened in 2007. Based on the characters from the Pixar film "Finding Nemo," this ride simulates a submarine ride to find Nemo and explore an underwater volcano, using animatronics and video. Though the submarines never truly submerge, you'll have the feeling that they do.
Disney Princess Fantasy Faire
The Princess Fantasy Faire opened in 2006 in the Fantasyland Theatre. Rather than a single attraction, it's actually a set of them. The Princess Royal Walk features several princess characters that children can meet and pose for photos with. The two Royal Crafts areas provide children with craft activities like coloring or decorating crowns. The Princess & Knighthood Training show provides an entertaining look at how to be "proper" and ends with an audience participation dance. Princess Storytelling features princesses telling their own royal stories. Finally, face painting and hair braiding is available for a fee.
Goofy's Playhouse
Originally a bouncehouse, it opened in 2006 as a play area designed especially for 2- to 5-year-olds. The playhouse features an outdoor play area with a slide and garden-themed sculptures to climb on. Though the ground looked like wood mulch outside, it's actually rubber so you don't need to worry about bruised knees or splinters. Inside Goofy's house, you'll find furniture and some fun personal effects to inspire children's imaginations.
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters
Opened in 2005, this interactive attraction is both a ride and a shooting gallery. Passengers board small cars, or Star Cruisers, equipped with laser guns, while Buzz Lightyear presents their mission---to save the universe by destroying a secret weapon by shooting targets with the guns. Each passenger's score is recorded on the dashboard, and those with the top ten scores of the day get their photos and scores posted at the ride's exit.
