The Times Square Ball Drop
The Ball Drop is the grand-daddy of all New Year's events. With huge crowds numbering in the hundreds of thousands, Times Square becomes the place to be December 31st. Contrary to popular belief, there is no charge to enter the area as a spectator (this is a popular scam), but it's recommended that you arrive in the afternoon to grab a good spot. Better yet, chip in with a large group of friends for a hotel room and watch from the window. The Times Square Ball Drop is at 42nd Street and Broadway, although viewing areas stretch for several blocks around the vicinity.
