No state in the U.S. has more historic landmarks than
New York. There are a total of 258 National Historic Landmarks in New York as designated by the government, with 108 of those in New York City. Many of these landmarks are related to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars as well as famous individuals from American history. Other landmarks are important buildings and structures found in the state.
People
Women's rights supporter Susan B. Anthony's home in Rochester was made an historic landmark in 1965. Abolitionist John Brown's home and grave are located in Lake Placid. President Franklin Roosevelt's Hyde Park estate is an historic landmark as is the home of composer John Philip Sousa in Port Washington.
Forts
Fort Ticonderoga in Essex County was made an historic site in 1960. It was a vital fortification in the French and Indian Wars as well as the Revolutionary War. Fort Niagara and Fort Crailo are also historic forts that were made landmarks by the U.S. government.
Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, was the first steel-wire suspension type bridge ever constructed. The bridge connects New York City to Long Island over the East River and was made a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
New York Public Library
The New York Public Library is one of the largest in the world and boasts a reading room that is almost 80 feet by 300 feet long with 52 foot high ceilings. Made a National Historic Landmark in 1965, the main branch of this fabulous library opened in May of 1911.
U.S. Military Academy
Also known as West Point for its location in that city along the Hudson River in upstate New York, this is the oldest continually occupied post in the nation. West Point was made a landmark in 1960. Some of the history includes its commander, Benedict Arnold, betraying his country by trying to allow the British to take the establishment in 1780.
