Topsail Island, consisting of Topsail beach, Surf City, and North Topsail Beach, is a destination rich in history and tourist attractions. It received the name "topsail" due to it being a hiding place for pirates in the 1700's. Merchants noticed a partial view of the top of their sails in passing. The island is the home to many attractions like museums, resorts, vacation homes, shops, and outdoor activities like kayaking, boating and biking. There are a wide variety of restaurants that visitors and residents can dine in ranging from casual to luxurious.
