Taking a vacation to visit the majestic redwoods has more to offer than just looking at a forest of tall trees. Northern California contains thousands of acres that are maintained as parks, full of family-friendly, outdoor activities. During a visit to these parks, you have the opportunity to relax while fishing, swimming, taking a walk through the trees, or just sitting outside of your tent or RV enjoying the breathtaking scenery.
Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve
Located in Sonoma County, just outside of Guerneville, California, sits 805 acres that make up Armstrong Redwoods State National Reserve. Entry into the park is $7 a vehicle and $50 for buses. Although there is no camping allowed, there are picnic locations, horse trails and hiking. Hiking trails in the park range from easy one-mile walks to a strenuous nine-mile trail that includes a 1500 foot climb. Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve is open daily from 8 a.m. until one hour after sunset.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park
Humboldt Redwoods State Park contains 53,000 acres, with 17,000 acres of the park being home to the world's largest old growth redwood forest. There are more than 250 camp sites to choose from, but the RV hookups cannot accommodate campers overs 33 feet. Humboldt Redwoods State Park offers 100 miles of hiking, biking and horse trails as well as the 32 miles long Avenue of Giants. Humboldt Redwoods State Park is located in Northern California, 228 miles north of San Francisco.
Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park
Located just nine miles east of Crescent City, California, the Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park features approximately 20 miles of nature trails, river access and a visitor center. The state park contains 10,000 acres of protected redwood groves as well as Smith River and Mill Creek. Visitors to the Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park can enjoy 89 camping sites that are open year-round. Some camp sites allow for RV hookups, but can only accommodate RVs under 35 feet. Other recreational options offered by the park are fishing, picnic areas and swimming areas.
