Why Is Las Vegas Called Sam's Town?

Las Vegas is sometimes referred to as "Sam's Town" because of the popularity of a hotel and casino of the same name, five miles off the Strip, that has catered to both tourists and locals since 1979. This moniker became even more common when the popular rock group The Killers, which is from Vegas, titled its second album "Sam's Town" in 2006.
