Lake Tahoe is located in the northeast corner of the state of California. The lake also borders the state of Nevada. At 12 miles wide and 22 miles long---there is a lot to do on the lake. The beauty surrounding this 1,600 foot deep lake should not go unnoticed, especially during the winter months. Snow is often abundant in the area throughout winter, leaving plenty of options open for outdoor recreation and fun.
Skiing

One of the most popular sports to engage in around the Lake Tahoe area is downhill skiing. Set among the breathtaking Sierra Mountains, Lake Tahoe is a ski lover's paradise. Lake Tahoe is loaded with ski resorts that offer a diverse terrain of ski slopes. Choose from open bowls, narrow runs and forest spikes. Because of the many natural made gulleys and chutes throughout the slopes, this is also the perfect place for snowboarding. Because of the large amount of ski resorts there is the option of obtaining interchangeable lift tickets to be able to switch slopes if desired.

Snowmobiling

One thing that the Lake Tahoe area is noted for is its trails. In the winter, many of these trails turn into snowmobile trails. There are typically three riding levels including beginning, intermediate and advanced. The beginner trails are perfect for groups or those used to a more slower pace on a machine. Most terrain is flat and open in a beginner trail. Intermediate may involve some slopes, navigation around large trees and brush and some ungroomed trail areas. For those traveling alone or for advanced riders, advanced trails are available. Many of these trails are ungroomed and may involve large slopes and rugged terrain. Popular trail areas include the Blackwood Canyon Area and Martis Peak.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is a wonderful family activity for the winter months in Lake Tahoe. Most outdoor ice rinks are natural but maintained by independent owners. Many are weather permitting, such as the resort at Squaw Creek, while others such as the South Tahoe Ice Arena are partially indoors. Most have skate rentals---which is perfect for those who are vacationing or traveling without their skates. Most can be rented by the hour.

Sleigh Rides

One way to enjoy the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe is by taking a sleigh ride at the base of the Sierras or near the lake. Horse-drawn and able to transport up to four passengers, a sleigh ride is an old-fashioned experience that will create a lasting memory. The Borges Family Sleigh Rides offer guests the ability to travel first class in an antique European Horse Sleigh. The powerhouses of the trip---two trusty Clydesdales---are willing to take you safely though some of the most beautiful countryside of Lake Tahoe. A storyteller guides guests through local area landmarks while the sleigh bustles through the snow.
