Lake Powell Tourism
Imagine a huge, sky-blue lake in the midst of sandstone hills, cliffs, canyons and sculpted forms painted in shades of orange and pink. This is the essence of Lake Powell. The artificial lake, created by the Glen Canyon Dam, sits inside the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
Page, Arizona
This small town, founded to serve dam workers in 1957, offers accommodations ranging from bed and breakfasts to a fancy resort as well as a variety of restaurants, guides, boat rentals and outfitters. Page overlooks Lake Powell and is the site of the John Wesley Powell Museum.
Boating
Floating on the lake in a houseboat is a perfect way to explore the canyons and soak in the color and forms of the American Southwest. Rent these and other recreational boats at one of the marinas.
Walking and Hiking
The beaches are open for walks, but most are accessible only by boats. Some short hikes are accessible by car. Hikers who are more adventurous must pay close attention to the weather because flash floods in the slot canyons can be lethal; all hikers need to pack plenty of water as well as liquids with electrolytes.
Rainbow Bridge
The Rainbow Bridge National Monument, the largest natural bridge in the world, spans one of the lake's side canyons. The monument is accessible via boat tours from Wahweap, Bullfrog and Halls Crossing marina or a 26-mile hike roundtrip.
Antelope Canyon
Antelope Canyon is a classic Southwestern slot canyon, carved in sandstone, whose narrow, curvy spaces and high walls. The canyon is a Navajo tribal park with its own system of fees for both its upper and lower sections.
Defiance House
Defiance House is the site of ancient Puebloan dwellings, named for a large pictograph of warriors with shields and clubs.
