Wows and Woes

The climate is fabulous. Directly behind the hotel is a lovely promenade to watch the local seals napping and basking in the sun. Minutes away is Torrey Pines State Park, where you'll see hand gliders sailing off the cliffs above. It offers one of the best beaches anywhere.

Insider Tips

La Valencia offers everything from casual dining to a formal dinner in a small, intimate setting. There's something for everyone, and the food is exquisitely prepared and presented. There is also a large wine list.

There are a number of excellent golf courses nearby. Tennis is available at a nearby sister property. You can arrange for a massage or spa treatment after you exercise.

Author's Most Memorable Moment

I visited La Valencia with my wife on Thanksgiving, and we had dinner that evening at the hotel's Sky Room restaurant. Since I've never been very fond of turkey, I ordered lobster. It came so beautifully prepared that I took a picture of it, and of course, it was utterly delicious. That was definitely a first!

Bottom Line

Although it's expensive, La Valencia is well worth it. A stay at this lovely hotel is an unforgettable experience.
