National Zoo

The National Zoological Park is just one sector of the world-famous Smithsonian Institution, and is both an educational and fun place for kids to visit. It is the biggest museum and research center on the planet. The National Zoo is not only a place where children can see a large array of animals, but it is a massive zoological park that spans 163 acres within Rock Creek Park. Rock Creek Park is located in the center of D.C. Over 2,700 creatures from approxiately 435 different species live at the National Zoological Park.

National Aquarium

In existence since 1931, the National Aquarium in Washington, D.C., is the oldest aquarium in the United States. The aquarium has a convenient location near several other important tourist attractions, being a mere block away from the Washington Monument and being very close to the Smithsonian museums. This aquarium consists of over 80 exhibits representing approximately 200 species of freshwater and salt aquatic life.

U.S. Botanic Garden

The U.S. Botanic Garden sits right in front of the United States Capitol, and consists of a conservatory (constructed out of glass) as well as several gardens. The gardens are 2 acres in size and are a beautiful place to go for a leisurely stroll and relax. There are a lot of gorgeous and vibrant local plants in the gardens. Be sure to check out the spectacular rose garden as well as all of the international plants inside of the conservatory. Kids will learn a lot about flora from all around the world, and have a lot of fun looking at the bright colors.
