Even though New Jersey has its share of international restaurants--ranging from Mexican and Chinese to French and Italian, it also features a handful of Irish restaurants, although they may be less abundant. Some of these restaurants are award-winning establishments, while others are simply local, popular places to eat. These Irish restaurants give New Jersey diners a different option with different meals when considering a place to eat.
Tumulty's
Tumulty's is one of the oldest restaurants located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The restaurant started out as a tavern in 1937 and was owned by Peter Tumulty. In 1964, Tumulty's son, Frank bought the pub and turned it into a restaurant. Although a 1970 fire caused the restaurant to change buildings, it has been a successful business since its inception. The restaurant features a typical Irish decor, with Irish flags and shamrocks adorning the walls. This casual restaurant features a takeout menu as well as a dine-in menu. Guests can order a number of items from Tumulty's including seafood, shellfish, sandwiches, steaks, pasta, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash. Bangers and mash is a popular dish that features Irish sausage served with sauteed onions and gravy served over mashed potatoes.
