Inetresting Facts About North Carolina
North Carolina, one of the original 13 colonies, is known for many things. It is the state where the Wright Brothers pioneered manned flight, home of many NASCAR auto racing legends and the heart of the tobacco industry in the United States. It has burgeoning health and banking sectors, an abundance of vineyards and wineries and its 300-mile strand of beaches is a haven for tourists. But there is a trove of little-known facts about the state, some of which are included below.
State Insect

The honey bee is the official state insect. North Carolina shares its state insect with 13 other U.S. states (Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah and Wisconsin).

Hall of Fame

Salisbury, North Carolina is home to the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame.

First in Flight

On Dec. 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, a plane built and (and alternately piloted) by the American brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright took off into history, becoming the first heavier-than-air, powered craft to make a controlled and sustained flight. It was the first of four attempts that day and lasted a mere 12 seconds. In the final try, Wilbur guided the craft 852 feet in 59 seconds.

NASCAR Hall of Fame

In May 2007, construction began on the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina. The stock car racing shrine is expected to be completed next year. One of the attractions being considered is a simulator that will put visitors in a race car driver's seat.

Warships

Wilmington, North Carolina is home to the USS North Carolina, a battleship that was decommissioned in 1947 and has since been turned into a floating museum and memorial. It is one of several vessels to bear the name of the state. During the Civil War the ironclad CSS North Carolina was commissioned by the Confederate navy.
