The Grand Canyon in Arizona is often described as "huge." It is the largest land gorge in the world and an immensely popular tourist attraction for both U.S. and international travelers. If you're traveling to see it, be prepared to be amazed by its size.
Length
Carved by the Colorado river, the gorge that makes up the Grand Canyon is 277 miles long. It took about two to three million years for the gorge to be formed, according to geologists who have dated the exposed rock.
Depth
The Canyon measures 4,000 to 5,000 feet deep. The Colorado River still flows through the Canyon, providing white-water rafting opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
Width
The widest point is at Lipan Point, where the Canyon is 18 miles across. The narrowest point is at Marble Point, where the Canyon is just 600 feet wide.
Area
The Grand Canyon covers an area that is 1,900 square miles.
Tourists
The Grand Canyon plays host to about five million tourists each year. The most popular spot to visit is the South Rim.
Trails
Hiking in and back out in one day is not advised, according to the National Park Service. It can take anywhere from seven to 12 hours and requires a tremendous amount of water--about 200 ounces.
