There are five main regions of Virginia that are known for their
beaches. While all five contain numerous
resorts that are within walking distance of the sand, a few hotels--and beaches--win out because they provide better amenities, accommodations and access to the coast than others. Those looking for some of the best accommodations should travel to the Chesapeake Bay/Eastern Shore, Hampton and Virginia
beach areas. It's these regions that host the best outdoor activities and the best accommodations, whether you're looking for privacy, low prices or spectacular ocean views.
Four Sails Resort
The Four Sails resort is located on the northern shores of Virginia Beach. It's so close to the sand and the water, in fact, that guests can dine on the beach's boardwalk while remaining inside the Four Sails Resort's 33rd Street Cafe. The resort is perfect for families and couples alike, as the accommodations contain numerous two-bedroom units, as well as penthouses, ensuring that every guest has ample room and privacy. Those hoping for year-round warm water can enjoy the resort's indoor pool, while those who need a little extra tune-up before hitting the beach can work out in the Four Sails gym or hit the sauna.

Hampton Marina Hotel
The Hampton Marina Hotel has the perfect location for those traveling to the marina city of Hampton, Virginia. The Hampton Marina is not only the sole hotel located on the waterfront in Hampton but it is also within walking distance of a few major tourist destinations. Popular walking trips include the Carousel Park, the Virginia Air and Space Center and Hampton University. Those who don't intend to hit the beach can still experience the sun at the Hampton Marina's roof-top pool and sun deck. Its prime location on the water also ensures that the hotel has some of the best oysters in town, which can be found at its waterfront Oyster Alley. The rooms feature a fitting nautical theme, many of which overlook water--either the rooftop pool, which is built on a lower-level tower, or the ocean.

Sunset Beach Resort
The Sunset Beach Resort is located near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on Virginia's east shore. The resort maintains a private beach, which is perfect for travelers who prefer smaller, more intimate crowds. The beach contains lounge and umbrella chairs that can be rented for a small fee, as well as a pub that features a deck seating. The rooms at the Sunset Beach Resort are no frills, but that's because they keep the resort's prices reasonable. Those looking for something a little nicer can upgrade to a jacuzzi suite, however. These suites include two-person jacuzzis, living rooms and cooking facilities. With the resort's famous crab cakes and clam chowder--two Chesapeake Bay specialties--just steps away, it's doubtful that anyone uses the kitchen facilities much.
