Stone Mountain Park is one of the most stunning attractions in the
Atlanta area. The giant rock that is Stone Mountain rises high above the surrounding landscape, allowing for magnificent views. While the park may be best known for its controversial carving of famous Confederate soldiers and politicians, visitors to Stone Mountain Park can participate in a variety of activities.
Formation
Stone Mountain Park was created in 1958 to provide a park for the growing city of Atlanta. Before the creation of the park, Stone Mountain was famous for the unfinished carving on its side and for being the birthplace of the modern Ku Klux Klan.
Geology
The history of Stone Mountain itself began over 300 million years ago, when continents colliding with each other formed ridges of rock. Over time some of the rock wore away, creating the giant outcrop of rock known as Stone Mountain.
Carving
The carving of famous Confederates on the side of Stone Mountain was begun in 1916. It was finally finished in 1972.
Amenities
During the 1960s, transportation such as the Stone Mountain Railway and the Stone Mountain Skylift (which takes visitors to the top of the rock) were added. Other added attractions included carillon bells, a recreated antebellum plantation and a car museum.
Olympics
During the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Stone Mountain Park hosted the archery, tennis and cycling competitions.
Modern Amenities
Stone Mountain Park now boasts a golf course and several water attractions, along with nature trails and camping, hiking and fishing.
