The History of South Beach, Miami

South beach is the southernmost section of Miami, bridging the Atlantic Ocean and the Biscayne Bay. While the entire Miami area is a huge tourist draw, the South Beach area has been developed the longest and is a "must see" location for most Miami visitors.
Farming

During the late 1800s, South Beach was mostly used for coconut farming. The land was used for agricultural purposes until the early 1900s.

Building Up South Beach

In 1912, the Lummus Brothers bought approximately 400 acres with hopes of building up the highly desired oceanfront property.

Pearl Harbor

In 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Government and the Army Air Corps took command over the South Beach area for several months.

Fashion

During the 1980s, the fashion industry took over the South Beach, Miami area. Photographers were drawn to the flawless beaches and modeling agencies were drawn to the prime location.

Tourism

South Beach, along with the rest of Miami, receives hundreds of thousands of tourists a year. Many young travelers come for spring break to enjoy the beaches and hundreds of nightclubs and bars in the area.
