The History of SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida
SeaWorld is known around the globe for its amazing research and entertainment experience. The multiple theme parks have been all been very successful. One of the most popular parks is located in
Orlando, Florida.
SeaWorld Beginnings
SeaWorld began in San Diego in 1964. It was instantly successful and a second park was opened in 1970 in Ohio. When Walt Disney World opened in the Orlando area, the leadership at SeaWorld saw an opportunity to expand and SeaWorld Orlando opened in 1973.
First Purchase
SeaWorld Orlando was purchased as part of the entire SeaWorld company by Harcourt, Brice, Jovanovich (HBJ) in 1976. The parks helped the company reach sales of $1.7 million in just one year.
Problems for HBJ
Due to rapid expansion and a takeover attempt, HBJ had put itself onto the brink of bankruptcy by the late 1980s. The company refused to sell the park, opting to expand into San Antonio. This did not help the troubled company and it was forced to reorganize and sell SeaWorld.
Anheuser-Busch
In 1989, SeaWorld Orlando was sold to beer maker Anheuser-Busch as part of its theme park division. Anheuser-Busch began to put its mark on the parks, most notably with a beer tasting area.
Today
Anheuser-Bush has spent millions of dollars on SeaWorld Orlando, expanding and greatly refurbishing it. It continues to be a major player in the Orlando theme park industry.
