Diverse Roots
American Indians from the Ute tribe have lived in the area, along with explorers from Spain and trappers from France.
Oil Boom
The discovery of oil caused Florence to boom in 1862. The town is home to the United States' second discovered oil field, and because of this, Florence is also home to some of the oldest wells still in use today.

Gold was discovered in the area by Bob Womack in 1890. Railroad construction, which was completed in 1894, allowed the ore to be transported to Florence to be smelted.

Historic structures
Florence still has many historic homes and buildings, including the Rialto Theatre, built in the early 1900s.
