The History of the Fairmont Hotel in Santa Monica

The Fairmont Mirimar Hotel in Santa Monica is as old as the city itself. Both city and hotel have become a destination for many travelers and sightseers.
The Mirimar

Originally, the Fairmont Hotel was called the Mirimar by founder John P. Jones. It was his home until 1912.

Early 1900s

King C. Gillette, the inventor of the safety razor, was the next owner. In 1921, it was owned by Gilbert Stevenson. The brick building was added for private apartments in 1924.

Famous Ties

Some of the famous movie people to visit were Greta Garbo, Marilyn Monroe, Cary Grant, Doris Day and Susan Hayward. Politicians such as John Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt and Bill Clinton also stayed here.

Historic Pieces

One of the historic pieces of the hotel is the 100-year-old, 80-foot-tall fig tree. Another historical piece of the building is the bar, which once housed the original library. The building has been in many television and movie productions.

Ties to Fairmont Hotels

The hotel was purchased by an investment group that brought in Fairmont Hotels and resorts to manage the property. It has been a Fairmont Hotel since 1999.
