Historical Facts About Orlando Florida
Orlando, Florida, is one of the most visited places in Florida. Home to many different theme parks and
resorts, this city is known throughout the country. The history of how Orlando came to be is intertwined with the history of the state.
Indian Wars
The Seminole Indians fought the Spanish twice for control of the Florida peninsula. After the second of these Wars, settlers moved into an army post in central Florida.
Name
Originally named Jernigan, it was changed to honor Orlando Reeves who was killed by the Seminoles. The City was formally founded on July 21, 1875.
Next hundred years
The next hundred years saw a growth in the Orlando area due to cattle farming and citrus growth. It slowly became a center of commerce with its own airport opening in 1928. Also during the 1920's, Martin Marietta missile factory opened in Orlando, becoming the region's biggest employer.
Disney
In 1971, Disney opened a theme park in Orlando, Walt Disney World. The success of this theme park encouraged other park operators to try Orlando, and Sea World opened not long after Walt Disney World.
Growth
Orlando kept seeing more growth through the 1980's and 1990's (when Universal also opened a theme park). Today, it is responsible for the majority of Florida's tourist income.
