Greely, Alaska, also known as Fort Greely, is a small town is located 100 miles southeast of Fairbanks and 350 miles northeast of Anchorage. The area is popular with fishermen because of the wide range of fishing. Fishing is available in the area lakes, streams, glaciers and rivers. Fishermen also like the area because of the mountain views of the Alaska Range found near all fishing areas.
Fish Species

Salmon and halibut are common fish found in Alaska, but the fish in Greely is different. Here the most popular type of fish is the Artic char, with the grayling following a close second. These two types of fish are commonly found during the winter months. In the summer and spring months, fishermen encounter types of salmon and rainbow trout, particularly around the Copper River.

Temperatures

Those fishing in the Greely area should be aware of the cold temperatures, which are year round. Even in the summer months the air temperature is fairly low, as is the temperature of the water. With the wind chill, the temperature can easily drop below zero and cause damage to the equipment. Those fishing should take precautions by wearing multiple layers of clothing and covering their face.
