The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain serves up yummy treats!
The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop in Downtown Disney in
Orlando, Florida, can satisfy nearly anyone's sweet tooth. Cool off with one of its myriad specialty sundaes, warm up with a cup of Ghirardelli hot chocolate or enjoy a traditional ice cream cone after a day at one of the theme parks or strolling the Downtown Disney area. The eatery also has other flavors for those who aren't chocolate lovers. Don't forget to visit the shop next door, which sells a variety of decadent Ghirardelli delights -- and even has someone handing out samples!
Wows and Woes
What could wow more than an Earthquake, with eight scoops of ice cream and eight toppings, plus whipped cream, chocolate chips and a cherry? This place is a sundae-lover's dream.
In traditional Disney fashion, prices are a little on the high side. It also may be hard to find seating.
Insider Tips
If you're an annual or seasonal Disney passholder, show your pass -- you get a discount.
If you're with another person or a group, have someone -- preferably an adult -- stay behind to find a table if it's busy. He can give his order to someone in the group and stake a claim on a table. It's much easier than trying to find one when you have ice cream melting in your hands!
Author's Most Memorable Moment
Last summer, my friends and I visited the Magic Kingdom. We lived nearby and had passes, so we went often. It was ridiculously hot, and we left the park to hit Downtown Disney's air-conditioned stores. When we saw the Ghirardelli shop, we made a beeline for it. There were four of us, and we each picked two flavors for the Earthquake. I've never seen four women eat eight scoops of ice cream so fast!
Bottom Line
Though a bit on the pricey side, the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain is a must for anyone who likes chocolate and ice cream. It's worth it, especially if you're on vacation!
