There are countless fun things to do in
San Francisco. The "City by the Bay" is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Its unique geography and mix of cultures make for a unique list of fun things to do. San Francisco's steep hills overlooking a natural harbor makes it one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The area has rich history reflected in its Gold Rush institutions and Asian influences.
Golden Gate Bridge
It is, by far, San Francisco's most recognized landmark. Drive over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco to Sausalito. Take the first exit over the bridge to get to the viewpoint looking across the bridge. For a view of the entire Golden Gate Bridge with San Francisco in the background, take the next exit, go under the highway, then up the hill.
Cable Cars
No visit to San Francisco is complete without a ride on a cable car. Board at Powell and Market Streets. Take the line to Ghirardelli Square or Fisherman's Wharf. The Ghirardelli chocolate shop has been serving up treats since the Gold Rush. Don't miss the hot fudge sundae. At Fisherman's Wharf you can buy fresh seafood right off the dock.
Chinatown
Wander the steep streets of Chinatown and lose yourself in another world. Chinese is spoken in the streets, the signs are all in Chinese, and everything from the food to the clothing is 100 percent authentic. It is the closest thing to a Chinese experience you can get outside of China. Be sure to eat in Chinatown at one of its famous dim sum restaurants.
Alcatraz
The island in the middle of San Francisco Bay houses the most famous former prison in the United States. The National Park Service now runs tours of the prison. Entry is free but there is a charge for the ferry from Pier 33. Make reservations ahead of time.
Union Square
If your idea of fun is shopping, head to Union Square. It is surrounded with upscale shops and art galleries. Street performers and artists fill the square. It is a relaxing place to hang out and people watch on a sunny San Francisco day.
