Sleeping Bear Dunes is the perfect escape from hectic city life. Here, getting back to nature is easy, with some of the most breathtaking views in North America. Summers offer ample opportunity for swimming and canoeing in the azure waters of Lake Michigan and picking up petosky stones on the beach. Don't forget to check out the local wineries in surrounding Leelanau County. Winters are equally enjoyable for snowboarding, skiing and snowshoeing.

Life is best experienced at a slower pace on this historic and pristine island in northern Michigan. Visit during the late spring and summer months when the weather is at its best. Motor vehicles are banned, so the warmer temperatures make exploring by foot, horseback, bicycle or carriage a pleasure. Become acquainted with the island's culture by staying in one of the luxurious bed and breakfasts. Also, be sure to pick up some of the mouthwatering Mackinac Island fudge at one of the many fudge shops. Too delicious to resist, you'll want to take a pound or two home with you.

The Tulip Time Festival, starting the first weekend of May, will take your breath away. It's a full week of lively celebrations to honor the city's Dutch heritage and culture. Parades, concerts, dancing and, of course, as the name suggests, tulips. If you would rather absorb the vibrant colors while relaxing, hop on one of the local trolleys. A vacation is incomplete without a trip to the Dutch market. Here you'll get a chance to sample scrumptious Dutch treats and load up on handicrafts like lace, wooden clogs and children's toys that are made using traditional techniques.

Frankenmuth

This enchanting Bavarian style village is like a picture from a storybook. Visit during the holiday season when you'll find the town transformed into a winter wonderland dripping in sparkling lights. Quaint shops overflow with goodies, from old-fashioned style candy to handmade dollhouse furniture. Dress your Christmas tree with exquisite decorations of every variety imaginable from Bronners. Post-holiday, Zhender's snowfest dishes up an exciting display of ice and snow sculptures in late January.
