Check out more than 12,500 of L.A.'s underwater inhabitants in 19 major habitats, such as Shark Lagoon and the Tropical Pacific Gallery. The latter features the elusive weedy sea dragon; the aquarium was the first one in the world to breed its babies successfully. Visitors can also enjoy the antics of the California seals and sea lions, which are revealed through an underwater viewing tunnel. Admission is $24 for adults, though online ordering reduces that price.

Before the dominance of the car, Los Angeles once boasted an extensive public transportation system with the Pacific Electric trolleys. You can ride the red wooden replicas of these 1909 rail cars on a 1 1/2-mile tourist line that connects the San Pedro cruise center with an outdoor mall, while passing by the Maritime Museum and Fisherman's Landing. A costumed conductor often adds colorful historical commentary. The rides run Fridays through Sundays and costs $1 for an all-day ticket.
