Pennsylvania is a big state and it's got a lot of really terrific family-friendly attractions.
Philadelphia alone has many historically relevant places that adults interested in educating their kids about the birth of America should place on their list. Philadelphia also has many great natural wonders; it's perfect for hikers, campers and those who love fishing. It is the kid-friendly vacation sites that may act as the greatest enticement, however.
Hershey Park
The streets made not be made of chocolate, but this is probably the closest you'll ever get. Hershey Park, located in Hershey, PA, is actually one of the oldest theme parks in America, existing since 1908. Highlights are the old Comet coaster, built in the 1940s; the Storm Runner, a 21st century, explosively fast coaster; the Tidal Force, a thrilling water ride that soaks passersby as well as riders; and over a dozen kiddie rides for the youngest members of the family. During October, Hershey in the Dark undergoes a Halloween transformation.
Please Touch Me Museum
The Please Touch Me Museum is located in Philadelphia and is ideal for families with very young children. This is a scientific museum in which kids are encouraged to touch things. Interactivity is the keyword and the little ones will have a ball actually being allowed to play with all the things inside a "museum." The Please Touch Me Museum expanded a few years ago and now there are even amusements designed to keep older kids and tweens happy. Adults will be thrilled by the nostalgia that comes with browsing the museum's collection of classic toys from the past 60 years.
Children's Musem of Pittsburgh
Another great museum for interactive fun, the Pittsburgh Children's Museum offers a varied collection of permanent and touring exhibits geared to children. Among the fun hands-on activities are T-shirt making, boat building and a gravity-defying room. A collection of classic Peanuts comic strips focusing on Charlie Brown's horrendous baseball career is one of the newest exhibitions on display.
Sports
Sports can really bring a family together, and Pennsylvania is overflowing with quality professional and amateur teams. The Pirates and Phillies are two of the oldest baseball teams in the league. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the most successful team in NFL history and the Eagles can one day be expected to fulfill their perennial potential. In addition, few college football teams enjoy the legacy offered by Penn State.
