From the glitz and glamor of Hollywood to the ancient trees at Redwood National Park, California draws millions of visitors each year to explore its wonders. California boasts sandy
beaches, arid deserts, wetland habitats and mountain ranges, making it one of the most environmentally diverse areas in America.
Hollywood
Contrary to popular belief, the motion picture industry did not originate in Hollywood. Many aspiring filmmakers and actors fled to California to avoid Thomas Edison's patents on filmmaking. From these dubious beginnings, Hollywood soon became the entertainment capital of the world. The original Hollywood sign actually read Hollywoodland until the late 1940s.
Knott's Berry Farm
Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, lays claim to the title of "America's First Theme Park." Walter Knott, the founder of the park, and Walt Disney of nearby Disneyland were said to have been acquaintances, and Disney may have been inspired by Knott's success.
Redwoods
California's Redwood National Park is home to the world's tallest trees, with the tallest reaching nearly 380 feet in height. The park draws thousands of visitors each year and has nearby camping and lodging facilities.
Ghost Towns
Due to the Gold Rush, California has one of the highest concentrations of ghost towns in the U.S. From the abandoned mines in the southern California town of Julian to Yreka in the north, ghost towns dot the landscape and offer a look into California's Gold Rush history.
Catalina Island
Located just off the coast of southern California, Catalina Island is a popular getaway destination for locals and visitors. Once a smugglers' island, many visitors tour underwater shipwrecks in glass-bottom boats or by snorkeling and scuba diving.
