Hawaii offers abundant opportunities to spend money, but there are plenty of things to do that won't empty your wallet. You can enjoy a day in the sun without spending a dime, unless you decide to rent snorkel equipment. You can also take in any number of hula shows put on at nearby shopping centers. Last, you can take in some of nature's wonders, find a private
beach and enjoy waterfalls just off the beaten track.
Beach
Grab a swimsuit, towel, sand digging tools, a book and some sunscreen and you're all set. Hawaii's islands offer some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Poipu Beach Park, on Kauai, offers safe swimming year round and ideal conditions for resting in the sun. There are free public toilets and a large lawn area if you want to get a break from the sand. Hapuna Beach State Park, on the big island of Hawaii is one of the youngest beaches, geologically speaking, in the islands. It's great for those just starting to learn to boogie board, but remember that the Big Island doesn't offer much sand as it's still growing as an island.
Free Hula Shows
Many local dance studios offer free shows at local shopping centers. It gives their dancers a chance to practice performing, and the local vendors appreciate the audience the performance brings in. On Maui, the Lahaina Cannery Mall offers free hula shows Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. There's a free hula show featuring kids on Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00 p.m.
Hike
Kauai offers abundant trails for hikers. They vary in difficulty, but many are suitable for first-timers or hikers going out with their kids. The Hanakapi'ai Trail is a strenuous climb, not suitable for families with young children, but you can head two miles in to get a beautiful beach experience without any crowds and continue another two miles to see beautiful falls. The Maha'ulepu Trail is an easy, family-friendly trail that offers a chance to see undeveloped coastline and a beach at the end. It's an easy, two-mile hike with limited elevations is easy for the kids.
