How to Fish in Petersburg, Alaska

Taking an Alaska fishing trip is the ideal vacation for many anglers. Fishing in Petersburg is a wonderful option for fishermen who like variety. You can go after salmon, halibut, cod, snapper and rock fish. You can go on fishing charters that will keep you on the water 12 hours or more per day.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step 1

Make plans to fish in Petersburg from May to mid-September. This is the primary sport fishing season in an area known as the inside passage. The waters tend to be calmer than during the rest of the year. The fish are most active at this time.

Step 2

Arrange a series of fishing days with the local charter companies. They will supply you with fishing equipment and take you into the areas that have been the most successful for sport fishermen in the past. You will be fishing for King Salmon, Coho Salmon, Silver Salmon and Halibut.

Step 3

Fly into Petersburg from Seattle. Alaska airlines has direct flights from Seattle to Petersburg every day, and you can go directly from the airport to a hotel or bed and breakfast and then walk to the harbor. This will give you a chance to fish the day you arrive or make sure you get an early start the next morning.

Step 4

Head to Petersburg from late May through the end of June if you want to go King Salmon fishing. This is the prime King Salmon season, and the charter boats will take you to the best spots in the inland passage in order to get your share of these memorable fish. King Salmon are almost always more than 15 pounds, and the average size is in the mid-20s. With skill and patience, you can get some that break the 70-pound mark.

Step 5

Find a charter service that will clean, freeze and box your fish for delivery. This is an expensive service, but if you are fishing for three days or more, you will have an opportunity to bring in a lot of fish.
