After visiting "party-central"
Las Vegas, many travelers want a reprieve from all of the glitz and glamor and seriously consider a trip to the Grand Canyon. They look sort of close, don't they? Before jumping in your car and hitting the gas, take the following information into consideration.
Distance
The Grand Canyon is about 270 miles from Las Vegas, roughly translating into about a 5-hour car ride. Travelers should also consider the desert heat, which is worse during the summer months.
Driving Yourself
From Las Vegas, take Highway 93 South (over the Hoover Dam) to Interstate 40 East. From there take Highway 64 North and go directly to the southern entrance of Grand Canyon National Park.
Go With a Tour Company
For many travelers it is easier to book a trip to the Grand Canyon with a reputable tour company. Take the bus, a helicopter, an airplane or a train, but keep in mind that if you opt for a tour you will likely only get to see the South Rim or the West Rim.
Cost
Factor in traveling costs if you decide to make the trip. The bus tour--which takes about 14 hours to get there--is about $150, while airplanes and helicopters can easily go for $500 or more. Driving yourself often is the least expensive and most rewarding way. Just make sure to factor in gasoline expenses.
Worth the Trip
The Grand Canyon is an incredible natural wonder, formed by the Colorado River over a period of millions of years. Today the massive gorge is a spectacular sight, giving off brilliant colors of red, orange and gold amidst the desert landscape.
