Facts About Parris Island

Parris Island is a famous Marine training center. Located in the South Carolina's Low Country, the Parris Island Recruit Depot has been providing basic training to recruits for almost a century. Parris Island is open to visitors, especially relatives and friends of newly graduated recruits.
Purpose

Parris Island Marine Depot is the center of recruit training for male Marine recruits from east of the Mississippi River (although recruits from the west can also request to train there). All female Marine recruits train at Parris Island.

History

The first Marines came to Parris Island in 1891 and were attached to the Naval Station at Port Royal. In 1915, Parris Island became the training depot for the Marine Corps.

Training

Modern Marine initial training lasts for 12 and a half weeks and culminates in the infamously tough "Crucible," which tests recruits to their limits in a variety of situations with very little food and sleep.

Museum

The public can visit the Parris Island Museum, which explores Marine history as well as the history of the surrounding Port Royal area. The museum was renovated in 2005.

Graduation

The graduation ceremonies held on Parris Island are famous for their display. Family and friends can get visitors' passes to watch the ceremonies.
