The welcome mat at Disney's Grand Californian
Disney's Grand Californian is an upscale hotel that can be accessed via Disney's California Adventures, Downtown Disney or its main entrance off of Disneyland Drive. The hotel contains 745 rooms, a full business and conference center, two pools, a kid's center, day spa and a variety of restaurants that range from casual to high-end. The Grand Californian is also in close proximity to Disney's other on-site hotels, the Disneyland Hotel and the Paradise Pier Hotel, as well as the Disneyland
resort.
Wows and Woes
The Grand Californian's rustic design is a nice departure from the commercial decor of the amusement parks. This hotel is also the quietest of Disney's three on-site hotels. The Napa Rose has great wine and terrific food.
The hotel is quite expensive, especially if you're on a family vacation, as this is the least child-friendly of the three hotels.
Insider Tips
Take advantage of the in-room amenities the hotel offers. Instead of going out for a meal or snack, order room service, which is available 24 hours a day. You can also request a mini fridge, which is perfect for families traveling with babies or for those hoping to save money on food. If you don't have enough bed space for every member of the family, request a sleeping bag. All these items come complimentary upon request.
Author's Most Memorable Moment
My favorite moment at the Grand Californian occurred the first time I walked into the hotel. The lobby was very broad and open, and I immediately spotted a large, roaring fire in the corner, surrounded by comfortable couches and even an old-fashioned-looking television that played classic Disney cartoons. I thought it was the perfect mix of sophistication and Disney.
Bottom Line
Those who can afford to stay at the Grand Californian will no doubt be impressed. Those on tight family budgets should skip it, however.
