The Grand Canyon is often considered one of the seven wonders of the world. Created by the Colorado River over approximately 15 million years, it's one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Southwest. It can be difficult to capture the majesty of the Grand Canyon in mere words.
Huge
The largest land gorge in the world, the Grand Canyon is from four to 13 miles wide at the top, 4,000 to 5,000 feet deep from the brim to its base and 217 miles in length.
Fantastic Colors
Because of the striation as the Colorado River cut the gorge, beautiful layers of color are easily visible. The colors vary from red to pink to hints of green as well as buff and deeper browns.
Long Drive
The best way to get to the Grand Canyon is by private auto or tour bus. It takes several hours (about five hours from Las Vegas or 3.5 hours from Phoenix) to get to the South rim.
Worth a Longer Visit
Because of the length of the journey, and the vastness of the Canyon itself, it's worth staying for several days to adequately explore. The South Rim offers over 30 hotels. The North Rim offers a few lodging choices, including one hotel inside the bounds of the park itself. There is additional lodging within the park, but it requires reservations about a year in advance of any trip.
Full of Outdoor Possibilities
Exploring the Canyon can be done by hiking, via guided mule, on a white-water rafting trip or camping on the floor of the Canyon. You can also hire a helicopter for a tour if mobility or time is an issue. Hikes can be very challenging and are not suitable for younger children or people with health issues.
