Custer State Park Camping Information

Custer State Park in South Dakota is the second largest state park in the United States, according to the South Dakota Office of Tourism. Visitors can explore the wilderness, get up close with wildlife and camp near streams and rivers on more than 70,000 acres. More than 1.5 million people visit the park each year, according to Custer State Park Superintendent Richard Miller.
Location

Custer State Park is located in the city of Custer in South Dakota's southwest corner. The state park encompasses more than 70,000 acres in the sprawling Black Hills.

Cost

Camping fees range from $16 to $21 per site per night. An annual state park pass to enter any state park in South Dakota is $28 per vehicle.

Camping Units

To set up camp at one of Custer's sites, you must be sleeping in a tent, a motor home, an RV or a pop-up camper. If you want a site with a hook-up for electricity, there is an additional $4 fee.

Fun Fact

Custer State Park is home to Harney Peak. It is the tallest peak in America east of the Rocky Mountains.

Warning

A herd of 1,500 bison call Custer State Park their home. Bison can weigh nearly 2,000 pounds, and they are unpredictable.
