Connecting a DVD recorder to a DIRECTV satellite receiver permits you to do a variety of things: Watch DIRECTV satellite programming on your TV with this kind of setup. Copy these broadcasts to a DVD using the DVD recorder. Watch these recorded programs or other DVD movies or shows on your television. View the DVD movies in higher quality, if you have a HD-capable TV and have added the optional hookup using component video cables.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Things You'll Need:
  • 2 RF coaxial cables 2 RCA A/V cables (red, white and yellow) 1 component video cable (red, green and blue) -- optional
  • 2 RF coaxial cables
  • 2 RCA A/V cables (red, white and yellow)
  • 1 component video cable (red, green and blue) -- optional
Step 1

Connect the satellite signal from the wall outlet to the DIRECTV receiver. Use a RF coaxial cable and the Sat IN (input) on the back of the receiver.

Step 2

Put the second RF coaxial cable on the TV OUT (output or out to TV) on the back of the DIRECTV receiver. Connect the other end to the TV VHF IN (input) on the back of the television.

Step 3

Connect one of the RCA cables to the DIRECTV receiver outputs. Match the colors of the connectors to the outputs: yellow connector to yellow jack, white to white and red to red.

Step 4

Connect the other end of this cable to the DVD recorder A/V IN (input). Match the colors of the connectors to the inputs.

Step 5

Step 6

Optional hookup: Replace the yellow RCA (video) cable going from the DVD to the TV with a component video cable for better picture quality. Use the green, blue and red component video outputs in place of the yellow one.

Step 7

Connect the other end to the component video inputs on the back of the television. Match the cable connectors to the corresponding input colors.
