About Colonial Williamsburg, Va.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Colonial Williamsburg was the center of culture, trade and politics in Virginia and the New World. After the Revolutionary War, much of Williamsburg fell into disrepair. In the early 1900s, renovations began in Williamsburg as a renewed interest in colonial history grew. Visitors to Colonial Williamsburg today step back in time to more than 300 acres of refurbished buildings, gardens, parks, museums and colonial trade shops with skilled artisans in period costumes.
Governor's Palace

The Governor's Palace, which took more than a decade to complete, is a landmark in Williamsburg. Nine governors, including Thomas Jefferson, resided at the palace, and tours are offered throughout the week for a look into colonial political life.

Walking Tours

Walking tours of Colonial Williamsburg are available throughout the day and begin at various points around the town. Every 15 minutes, a 30-minute tour of Colonial Williamsburg's history, gardens and architecture departs from the Williamsburg visitor's center.

Trade Shops

Each day, visitors can tour trade shops and witness craftsman in period costumes creating everything from herbal concoctions at the apothecary to 18th-century furniture at the cabinetmaker's shop. A popular stop is the working forge, where blacksmiths create tools and other items using colonial techniques.

Great Hopes Plantation

Plantation history comes to life at Great Hopes Plantation, where visitors explore crops, livestock and life on a working plantation. Of particular interest are the slave quarters, which offer a look into the daily life of plantation slaves.

DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum

The Dewitt Wallace Museum showcases life, art and furnishings from colonial times to the 19th century. The museum is open daily, and tickets must be purchased in person at the museum or at one of Williamsburg's visitor centers.
