Charleston South Carolina Visitors Guide
There are few cities that blend the historic with the modern as successfully as Charleston, South Carolina. Buildings that have witnessed hundreds of years of activity in this port city now house hip nightclubs and bars--evidence that historic preservation efforts have paid off. Because of its diversity, a trip to Charleston can include many different experiences.
Fort Sumter
The historic centerpiece of Charleston is Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War were fired in 1861. You can visit the fort, which is now a national monument, by taking a scenic ferry ride through Charleston Harbor.
Historic Downtown
Charleston's downtown area is full of wonderful historic buildings. Visit the Battery to see some of the most exquisite homes in the South and stop by the Market to shop for souvenirs. Be sure to look for the local ladies making sweetgrass baskets by hand.
South Carolina Aquarium
The South Carolina Aquarium has over 6,000 animals and plants on display, from penguins to loggerhead sea turtles. Exhibits are built around the regions of the Appalachian Watershed, including the mountains, Piedmont and coast.
Arts & Culture
Charleston is home to a vibrant arts community. Each May, the world-renowned Spoleto Festival draws internationally known performers in music, theater and dance. The culinary arts are also alive and well, with excellent restaurants from various cuisines on nearly every corner.
Ravenel Bridge
The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge (also known as the Cooper River Bridge) opened in 2005 to much fanfare, as a modern bridge had been sorely needed for many years. It's beautiful to look at and breathtaking to drive across--but the views are even more spectacular from the pedestrian and bike lane.
Patriots Point
Take a tour of the four retired ships at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, including the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. You'll also find many planes on display, as well as the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum.
