Why Are They Called the Florida Keys and Not Islands?

The Florida Keys were first named Los Martires, which means "the martyrs." Early Spanish explorers thought the islands looked like suffering men. The islands were later called "keys," which is derived from the Spanish word "cayo" (small island).
